Congress and loyalists wish to ramp up the pressure to defend the president during the impeachment inquiry – which begins next week – by digging into Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China.
However, some Senate Republicans have expressed doubts over the strategy, fearing it would look like a political tactic and would turn the ‘solemn and serious’ constitutional process into a ‘reality show’, the Washington Post reports.
Donald Trump’s allies have pushed for Joe Biden and his son Hunter (pictured) to be called as witnesses during the president’s impeachment trial
Trump is accused of breaking the law by pressuring Ukraine’s leader to delve into damaging information on his political rival to boost his re-election.
But because Joe Biden was vice president at the time, allies of Mr Trump think bringing father and son as witnesses could be a way in to explain he asked President Volodymyr Zelensky to ‘look into’ the pair in a phone call on July 25.
The president alleges Mr Biden abused his power to pressure Ukraine to back away from a criminal investigation that could implicate his son – then working for a Ukrainian energy company. Both have denied any wrongdoing.
Republican Sens. Rand Paul pushed for father and son to be held as witnesses at a campaign rally with the president in Kentucky on Monday.
‘I say this to my fellow colleagues in Congress, to every Republican in Washington: Step up and subpoena Hunter Biden and subpoena the whistleblower!’ He addressed the crowd.
But Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) told the publication that bringing Hunter as a witness in the trial would be ‘a sideshow.’

He added that impeachment ‘is a very solemn and serious constitutional process, and I just think that whatever the House decides to vote on… that’s what we ought to consider and not make this any more of a reality show than it’s likely to become.’
Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters and loyalists have put pressure on the Senate to defend the president.
‘The Bidens have to be called,’ former White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon said Sunday on Fox News. ‘Joe Biden is a hand grenade, and Hunter Biden is the pin. And when that pin gets pulled, the shrapnel is going to blow back all over the Democratic establishment.’
It comes after Trump went on full assault against his list of enemies – the Democrats, the news media and the whistleblower too – at a Monroe, Louisiana rally as he tried to bolster the state’s Republican governor candidate.

Trump was joined onstage by two famous locals – Phil and Willie Robertson of ‘Duck Dynasty’ fame.
‘Democrats are becoming increasingly totalitarian,’ Trump raged. ‘Suppressing dissent, defaming the innocent, eliminating due process, staging show trials and trying to overthrow the American democracy to impose their socialist agenda.’
He called the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry a ‘scam’ and railed against the whistleblower, saying they were aided by ‘the sleaze back there’ pointing at the pack of reporters standing on the press risers.
‘They ripped the guts out of our country,’ he said of the Democrats who are investigating him.
And while impeachment centers around whether the president pressured Ukraine’s leader – by holding up military aid and a White House visit – to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden, the president went after them too.
On Hunter Biden, Trump cracked, ‘In Louisiana you wouldn’t have hired him to be at your energy companies. They would have paid to keep him the hell out.’
The president called out to a child in the crowd and asked his age.
‘He’s eight,’ Trump said. ‘He knows energy better than Joe Biden’s son.’
Trump also claimed the Democrats were ‘trying to cover up slow, Sleepy Biden.’
