Iain Lee has admitted he is ‘gutted and feeling really low’ about losing his talkRADIO show and admits he ‘has no idea’ why bosses came to their decision.
Last week, the 46-year-old presenter confirmed via social media that his time with the station has come to an end after talkRADIO chose not to offer him a new contract after four years of hosting the programme.
Speaking to Jeremy Vine, he lamented his career change in the chat, where he described himself as “a multi award winning broadcaster” before urging any radio stations to recruit him for freelance work.
Tough times: Iain Lee has admitted he is ‘gutted and feeling really low’ about losing his talkRADIO show and admits he ‘has no idea’ why bosses came to their decision
Iain told Jeremy: ‘It does feel odd. I know in the scheme of things a guy losing a radio show on a right wing radio station is not big news but I’m gutted…
‘I loved that show and I felt we made something very special and very unique. I have no idea why they got rid of a multi-award winning broadcaster’.
Reaching out to fans and peers, Iain went on: ‘There’s been so much lovely support from people saying you’ll get a gig really soon but I can tell you my phone is not ringing very much’.
He then made his job request, saying: ‘This is genuine if anybody has any cover shifts on radio stations. I am cheaper than you think. So give me a call…
Checkered: Last week, the 46-year-old presenter confirmed via social media that his time with the station has come to an end after talkRADIO chose not to offer him a new contract after four years of hosting the programme
‘I am low. I’m doing things that I know are good for me. I’m meditating, I’m playing with my cats and we’ll see where it goes but it’s not great.’
Last Tuesday he made the announcement, as Iain shared a message on his Twitter account, in which he explained: ‘I’ve been waiting for a while to find out if my contract was going to be renewed and today I was finally told that, no, it isn’t…
‘I won’t be going back on air. My last show was last night’s (which I thought was a little dull, a 5 out of 10 only! Out with a whimper!).’
He added: ‘I have had an amazing 4 years at talkRADIO. I’m the only host to be in the original slot that I asked for 4 years after the station started.
All over: Iain has announced his departure from talkRADIO after four years
Farewell: The 46-year-old presenter confirmed via social media that his on the station has come to an end, after talkRADIO chose not to offer him a new contract
‘The only host to have won an industry award (2 ARIAs actually, Best Speech Presenter 2017 and Best Radio Moment 2020). The only host to have saved 2 lives on air.
‘The only host to have helped a hopeless alcoholic find redemption. The only host to have had an actual breakdown on the radio. The only host to have told the truth about your prime minister being a racist idiot.
‘I could not have done this without my producer and later co-host Katherine Boyle. She was the real power behind the show, not me. I love you Katherine and I know that we made something unique.
‘Only you and I know what went on behind the scenes, and yet we stayed true to our aim – to bring more silliness and humanity to the radio. (sic)’
Lee also revealed he’s already keen to find another radio job.
He wrote: ‘Thank you listeners. All of you. You showed me that I was right to swim against the tide. You joined our silly little gang and played along. I am eternally grateful.
‘Oh, and radio controllers and programmers…got any cover shifts going?’ (sic)
Lee’s time with talkRADIO has been beset by a series of controversial moments, among them an apparent breakdown while he was on the air.
Sorry: Sorry: He later took to Twitter apologising to his co-host and the listeners for his behaviour on the show and said that certain factors had pushed him to his limit
The presenter worried listeners in April 2019 after announcing that he wanted to ‘quit’ the talkRADIO show and repeating, ‘It’s over, it’s over’.
Fans tuned in to the usually cheerful weeknight 10pm show, The Late Night Alternative, to find Lee denouncing the show as ‘pointless’, ‘wasting time until we die’ and ‘a radio station that no one listens to’.
The presenter launched into the emotional rant while co-host Katherine kept quiet for the most part with no producers stepping into help.
Revelation: In July 2019 Lee came out as bisexual live on air after telling listeners he had sex with ‘significantly older men’ when he was aged just 14
Thank you: He later credited fans for their support after coming out on national radio
During the rant father-of-two Lee, who separated from wife Helena Robinson in 2018, said he didn’t think he was setting a good example for his children by working at the show.
He said: ‘”What is your job dad?” I sit in a studio and I talk rubbish for three hours a night, what example is that to set my kids. That’s no example, that’s not a job, that’s not a job.’
He also voiced his frustration over the small listener base: ‘A radio station that no one listens to, that they don’t advertise. We get 25,000 listeners on this show. What’s the point in this? There is no point in this.’
Nasty: Fourteen months earlier he almost missed his own show after falling down a well in Milton Keynes, leading to police officers ‘blue-lighting’ him to his radio studio (pictured after the accident)
I’m back: The presenter later insisted he was well enough to present the show despite needing urgent medical assistance
He later took to Twitter apologising to his co-host and the listeners for his behaviour on the show and said that certain factors, among them witnessing a ‘near fatal car accident,’ had pushed him to his limit.
He wrote: ‘Again, very sorry for last night. Divorce, sex and being in a near fatal car crash and seeing some horrific things have stretched me to the limits. Disappointed some I saw as allies are using my emotional show as clickbait, but I guess that’s 2019.
‘Apologies to putting my best mate through that and I thank her for her ongoing support. I am blessed in that respect. I’m not the person you all think I am and I am working bloody hard to fix that. Marathon not a sprint and all that.’
Painful: In June 2018, just three months after the well incident, his nightly radio show was left hanging in the balance after the presenter revealed he was in hospital awaiting treatment following an owl attack
In July 2019 Lee came out as bisexual live on air after telling listeners he had sex with ‘significantly older men’ when he was aged just 14.
The host admitted he had been hiding his secret for 30 years but that the ‘weight of shame and self-destruction has lifted’.
Lee told listeners to his show on Monday that the last few months had been ‘lousy’ with him going through a divorce from his BBC journalist wife Helena.
He said: ‘I’ve been reminded of a lot of stuff that started when I was 14 or 15 years old when I was involved and engaged in sex acts with significantly older men.
‘This went on for quite a while. I’ve had a lot of confusion about it…these things happened and then I started putting myself in positions where they’d happen again.
‘Now I can see that it was abuse – a 14 year old me and 60 year old guy, I can see it was abuse. He’s helped me look at that in kind of a new light.
‘He’s helped me realise that I’m probably bi-sexual. That’s a big thing to come out. So I guess I’m coming out at the age of 46. I’m terrified by it.’
Long term: Lee has been a mainstay on talkRADIO for the last four years, but his time with the station is now over
Fourteen months earlier he almost missed his own show after falling down a well in Milton Keynes, leading to police officers ‘blue-lighting’ him to his radio studio.
Speaking to listeners after the incident – which left him needing a neck brace – he revealed he had thrown money in for luck, but it had got stuck in the side, and as he attempted to abseil in to retrieve it his rope snapped and he plummeted to the bottom.
He recalled: ‘I’m stood at this well and I’ve got a 20 pence piece and I thought I’d make a wish because things have been – with my mental health and marriage – things haven’t been great and I thought I needed a bit of luck.’
Revealing the coin got lodged in the side of the well, he continued: ‘You know what I did? I’m such an idiot. I’m so embarrassed. What I did first of all was try to reach it leaning in head first.
‘So there’s the rope with the bucket, I’m testing and pulling it and I think it’s going to take my weight and I go in feet first and…. I fell into the well. The water went up to just below my knee.’
Inspiration: The brave star, who placed third on 2017’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! has spoken openly about his battle with depression in the past
In June 2018, just three months after the well incident, his nightly radio show was left hanging in the balance after the presenter revealed he was in hospital awaiting treatment following an owl attack.
He later insisted he was well enough to present after sharing a shot of himself with his head swathed in bandages as he sat in a wheelchair outside an A&E department.
Captioning the shot, he wrote: ‘Ok. The doctors here are incredible. I’ve had a tetanus and a few other injections. They GLUED the scratches on my head back together with GLUE.
‘I’m woozy and in shock but fingers crossed I’ll be on air tonight at 10 on @talkRADIO on DAB, app and talkradio.co.uk.’
Lee originally broke the news of his potential absence to Twitter followers shortly after claiming he had been savaged by the commonly nocturnal bird in broad daylight.
He wrote: ‘Sorry guys. Not sure I’ll be able to do the show tonight. This is the weirdest thing but… I’ve just been attacked viciously. By an owl.
‘It sounds like a joke but it’s not. Just sitting in A&E with blood everywhere.’
