Tom Bergeron Leaves ‘Dancing with the Stars’ After 15 Years

Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews are saying goodbye to Dancing with the Stars. Bergeron, who has hosted the ABC dancing competition since 2005, announced the news on Twitter last night, saying, “It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career.”

Bergeron and Andrews’ departure as co-hosts comes as ABC moves to refresh the show ahead of its scheduled fall premiere. Dancing with the Stars Season 29 is slated to premiere in September, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the show will likely have to revamp its live format. In a statement, ABC said that DWTS plans to “embark on a new creative direction” to address these concerns, as well as the hosts’ exit.

“Tom Bergeron will forever be part of the Dancing with the Stars family. As we embark on a new creative direction, he departs the show with our sincerest thanks and gratitude for his trademark wit and charm that helped make this show a success,” ABC and producer BBC Studios said in a joint statement. “Erin will also not be returning, and we appreciate all that she brought to the ballroom. Fans have been rooting for her since she originally competed as a contestant back in 2010, and her signature sense of humor has become a hallmark of the show.”

Andrews, a prominent sportscaster, joined Bergeron as co-host in 2014, four years after she competed on Dancing with the Stars Season 10. She and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy ultimately came in third place out of 11 total couples.

ABC has yet to announce who will replace Bergeron and Andrews as hosts or how the Dancing with the Stars format will shift in the wake of the pandemic. However, despite the uncertainty, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke is confident that the competition will return in the fall.

“I have seen the presentation from the Dancing with the Stars producers on how we are planning to produce this show, post-COVID and with the health regulations in place because they have the advantage of making it in other territories and I am blown away by the ingenuity and the care which they are producing it,” she recently told Deadline. “We are bringing all of those innovations to the American broadcast. I’m really confident in their plan.”
