Law grad passes bar exam after taking the test while in labor

A graduate of the Loyola University Chicago School of Law has passed the bar exam, even though she went into labor while taking it and finished it the next day after giving birth. Brianna Hill said she slept for only 1½ hours after giving birth, then took the second part of the exam while anemic and sitting on an ice pack. (NBC Chicago, Above the Law)

Boies Schiller co-managing partner leaves the firm

Nicholas Gravante Jr., the co-managing partner of Boies Schiller Flexner, is leaving to join Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. A few other Boies Schiller partners are making the leap with Gravante. Boies Schiller has seen a string of departures this year. (Law.com, Law360)

New Jersey judge’s husband, wounded in attack, has medical setback

Lawyer Mark Anderl has had a medical setback after being shot by a gunman, according to his wife, U.S. District Judge Esther Salas of the District of New Jersey. Anderl was shot by a disgruntled litigant who also killed his and Salas’ son, Daniel, in an attack at their home. Anderl may need additional surgery after going through 13 operations, Salas said. 2 law firms open Chicago offices

Venable and Dickinson Wright are opening offices in Chicago. Venable is opening a Chicago office with six lawyers focusing on construction law who are joining the firm from Schiff Hardin. Dickinson Wright is opening its Chicago outpost after acquiring the 12-lawyer firm Stahl Cowen Crowley Addis. Law firm consultant Kent Zimmerman of the Zeughauser Group told Thomson Reuters Legal that Chicago is hospitable for law firms that want to expand into new high-rate markets.
