Whats New on Disney Plus in May 2021

It’s been a few months since the release of the first trailer for Disney’s Cruella (dropping on Disney+ this month with a Premiere Access upcharge), the studio’s next attempt to cash in on its IP by rehabilitating one of its rogues’ gallery of animated villains, which means the internet take factory has had lots of time to break it down.

Yes, that burning dress scene is right out of The Hunger Games. Yes, the tone does seem a little bit Harley Quinn, doesn’t it? Yes, it’s kinda weird that the brand that defines family-friendly entertainment seems to be taking a hard turn into justifying the actions of a woman best known for wanting to murder 99 puppies. (All Maleficent did was cast a non-lethal spell on one baby!)

But I haven’t seen nearly enough people talking about the fact that the film is co-written by Tony McNamara, who you might remember from his nomination for Best Original Screenplay for 2018’s The Favourite. Clearly Emma Stone appreciated the effort he put into humanizing her unrepentant, scheming character in that film and wanted him onboard here, and his involvement is one of the reasons—alongside the gorgeous trailers and my general penchant for sympathizing with the baddies in movies (they always have the best clothes)—I’m actually entertaining paying the extra $30 to catch this one via Disney+ Premiere Access when it drops on May 28.

In other Disney streaming news, May 4 is coming up, so naturally we’ve got something Star Wars-related to celebrate this most sanctified of corporate holidays. We know we’re getting Star Wars: The Bad Batch, a spinoff of the animated series The Clone Wars about a batch of clone troopers whose genetic programming is a little off, but there are rumors we’ll also finally get to see Star Wars: Detours, an animated spoof series from the makers of Robot Chicken that has been gathering dust since it was shelved in 2012 after Disney bought Lucasfilm. Apparently there are more than 50 episodes ready to go, so we’ll see what the Force delivers on the big day.

Otherwise, here’s what’s coming to Disney+ in May—including more of the High School Musical spinoff and a new season of the educational kid’s series Bluey, which will make that one guy in the comments very happy.
